What you loved for an instant
Was the slightly excited way her mouth opened when she smiled,
The symmetrical perfection of the features,
The healthy beauty of hair and skin, the intelligence
You noticed in demeanor and expression.
As she left, you saw his passive face,
Bored as he looked at her mutely as she followed him
Out of the crowded café,
And you wondered, as you admired her,
Why he didn’t love her, but maybe he did,
But like you, and everyone, he was hiding
His love. Certainly it was love that he hid?
