Which is worse?
To have no desires.
To have desires but not be allowed to express them.
To have desires and when they are expressed, they are denied.
To have desires, express them, have them fulfilled, resulting in anguish, shame, retribution, regret, or responsibilities which make fulfilling those desires no longer possible.
These correspond with the four human types.
To have no desires. The priest.
To have desires but not be allowed to express them. The aesthete.
To have desires and when they are expressed, they are denied. The criminal.
And the fourth scenario? The citizen.
Will our vanity allow us to concede the citizen is by far the most experienced and wise?
