In sports, skill matters, but luck, she matters more---
and this is what they say is God,
in the line that went before.

I didn't wait for the line particularly long,
it was a bit of wisdom
which intruded on the song.

"What is luck?" I asked,
since in my poem I boldly elevated luck.
"This is what they say is God,"
popped into my head,
rescuing the stanza sublimely.

How great, I thought to myself,
How timely.
Luck is how God manifests ourselves.
Philosophers must pass this test:

How all-knowing and willful can you be,
if you admit poetry
is merely lucky?
Thought you cannot control

rolls down like hard rain from the soul.
Look at the cloudy sky.
Individuality is luck,
unlike the patience between ear and eye.

In life, skill matters, but luck, she matters more,
and this is what they said is God
in the line that went before.
