A smile of strength is still a smile
but an old person’s face is permanently sad.
Scientists will fly into a rage
when I tell them sadness causes old age,
but what if it were true?
Science is the best science if it can do
things—but what has it done?
“Wash your hands,” Science said. Death still won.
I saw a beautiful face in a movie, dead,
and I wanted to be that face, instead,
if I could be that beautiful. The science of cinema
is the top science. Last night I saw
my young father in a dream, who said,
“for no reason am I here.” I said, “but dad, why are you here?”
And as I began to wake up from the dream he said, “because you are here,”
and after waking up, thinking about a host of things,
afraid of death, afraid that I was going mad,
but now, from the dream, happier and comforted,
in my mind, I pressed the angry scientist
on life, on death—and saw that he was sad.
