DEFINING GOD AS “GOOD WINS.”

Isn’t that all God means to most people? When some older person
seeks to convince you to believe in Jesus Christ, they pummel youthful anxiety
with “it’s going to be alright, no, I mean it’s really going to be alright.”
The guy’s relaxed but persistent manner you can’t help but admire—
with that part of yourself which is sad and not very social.
This guy’s the opposite of a Pink Floyd record. “It’s going to be alright”
is simpler and more cunning than even music or sex,
and you submit immediately in a primitive way,
because you want things to be alright.
It’s what you expect when you walk into a theater
or think about marrying someone. This will be alright.
It’s going to happen one day. Or you might die.
Or you’ll stay up, sweating, regretting something all night.
Maybe not now, you think, but I’ll love Christ one day.
“It’s going to be alright” is a message so primitive, you are not
going to let some guy convince you of it, just like that.
It feels too much like a gay seduction.
All the primitive things seduce, or they do not.
Like a dog who circles around before they piss,
I need my spot.
