
The poets don’t come to the point, afraid to say they are sad.
But they are sad. Terrified to use a word like sad (too simple)
they say rain falls on the river and though you can’t see the river
they devote a host of words in the poem to the river
rained on for the better part of the poem. Speech
is the heart of literature, the novel, the play, the poem, each
comes with a person talking—
until poetry changed. The Hollywood cinematographer is in charge.
