What if you don’t trust your thoughts?
If you don’t, what do you really know? Your feelings
come to your rescue: thoughts, say your feelings,
belong to somebody else; in school
they ask you to understand what others say;
our thoughts are not our own.
It’s wise not to trust too much.
Wealth lives on a primitive level:
Silk clothes cool to the touch.
Thoughts are for authority to say it knows
the icy rains, the warm snows.
But what if you don’t trust your feelings?
That’s even less important. Feelings
must obey thoughts, but thoughts,
we determined, aren’t yours,
so best not to trust feelings, too.
Why have strong feelings on what you don’t know?
The rain today is a mixture of rain and rain.
He told her she would call. Wait. Is this you?
