The advertising agent is right.
A thousand people will read my poem
in the middle of the night
if I let him do his work.
How many readers otherwise? Maybe two?
Advertising is the greatest poem.
No, seriously. It’s true.
Shakespeare wrote for a secret friend
and in his Sonnets said the world needs breeders.
Clever Shakespeare! We thought he wrote on love,
but all the time he was aiming at readers.
He invented a reflective man and had him use a sword.
Plays of blood got Shakespeare’s sonnets read.
The Stones wrote. And then they toured.
I will do what you say, advertising man.
The night is dark. Now what’s the plan?
