A poem is a pun that isn’t funny.
A poet is having fun with you;
A poet is a salesman who doesn’t take your money.
Kisses are money; that’s what he tried
To get from you—when you read his poem, and cried.
But you are a scholar of poetry,
As well-read as you are beautiful,
And you are sly, especially.
You knew what his poem was doing, as you cried.
You hate him for his poem, but much, much more, because he tried.
